Inspection of print and health warnings on cigarette packaging

The presentation of a cigarette pack is the only way a brand can promote and differentiate itself, so the quality of the print is vitally important. The EyeC Proofiler is an offline (sample) print inspection system that checks for print quality and accuracy on samples of your printed packaging material against the original proof. It will check for incorrectly printed characters and symbols as well as graphical deviations. Not only that but it is an invaluable aid to press make ready as it greatly speeds up the time to check the first off and by checking against the customer proof you can be sure that everything is correct . It means that a changeover can be carried out faster because there is no danger that wrong plates or cylinders have been inadvertently left on the press and not noticed. We recommend checking a complete repeat against the customer proof to ensure that not only is the press set up correctly with all correct plates and inks but that there is no damage on any part of the plates; if you only check one label or carton then a small hickey could be missed. EyeC has patented the method of checking multiple items against a single proof.

Health Warnings

Specifically for the tobacco industry EyeC has developed a new tool that can be used by printers of cigarette packaging or by incoming materials control of the tobacco company to ensure that the warnings meet the technical specifications and the frequency of appearance as required by the legislation. The Warning Text Combinations Tool runs on any of the Proofiler models and can scan sheets from A4 (297x 220mm) to B0 (1414x1000mm) depending on the model. The standard Proofiler software can check for content and technical compliance of the artwork against a PDF proof. The Warning Text Combinations Tool monitors the frequency of each different warning and checks that these appear in line with the legislation

Parts of DIRECTIVE 2001/37/EC OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT were introduced to harmonise the presentation of health warnings on cigarette packs across the EU. On 1st October 2008 The Tobacco Products (Manufacture, Presentation and Sale) (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 2007 comes into force in the UK. Regulation 7 of the Act introduces additional requirements for the health warnings that are printed on cigarette packs and other tobacco products. The new regulations call for 14 different pictorial warnings to be given on a prominent part of the pack. As in previous legislation the different warnings have to be applied equally across a batch.
